BACKYARD THEATRE SCHEDULE 2006 – 2007

BACK TO SCHOOL AT THE LITTLE ROYAL SCHOOLHOUSE

Sept. 2 – Sept. 30, 2006

Written and Directed by Paula Jo Peterson

"Back to School" has never been so much fun as when your little ones attend as a Prince and a Princess. Welcome to the Little Royal School, where the children in the audience are the royal students of Queen Spell-it-Right, King Math-is-fun, Prince Scientific, and Princess Habla Espanol. There is much audience participation in this fast-paced show as children join the characters on the stage for some royally fun games in reading, writing and arithmetic. Together the little princes and princesses in the audience help their teachers save the day and teach a well-deserved lesson to two misguided and misunderstood trouble-making Court Jesters named Likes-to-Play and Won’t-Pay-Attention.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD AND THE COOKIE WOLF

Oct. 7 – Oct. 28, 2006

Adapted by Michele Moad-Hageman and Directed by Paula Jo Peterson

This kid-friendly version of the classic children’s story of a little girl, who strays away from the path in the woods and meets a Big Bad Wolf, doesn’t even have a Big Bad Wolf! He is the Silly Cookie Wolf and the smell of the cookies in Little Red’s basket is almost too much for him to bear! The children learn the "going off in the woods by yourself" instructions from Little Red’s mother, Mrs. Red. She patiently packs Little Red’s basket with the help of the children in the audience and then doubles as Little Red’s Grandmother, Granny Red, at the end of the story. Along the journey in the woods, Little Red is reminded by big signs that say things like, "Don’t Play," "Stay on the Path," and " Don’t talk to strangers." And the children shout out the warnings when they appear from behind the trees in the woods. But does Little Red listen. No. She plays, she strays off the path and she talks to strangers! Everything ends on a good note, with both the wolf and Little Red learning their lessons. These important life messages about how to stay safe are repeated several times during the show in a fun, musical way designed to help the children to always remember never to talk to strangers!

The littlest pilgrim’s Thanksgiving

Nov. 4 – Nov. 22, 2006

Written by Rebecca Zuniga and Directed by Paula Jo Peterson

While his mother is preparing their first-ever Thanksgiving dinner, little Bobby Hollingsbrook goes on a fall adventure in the woods of the first American Colony. Along the way, Bobby and the children in the audience encounter four charming animals; Blossom the Opossum, Blousie the Mousie, Murtle the Birdle, and Honey the Bunnie, who each have a story to tell about what it means to be thankful. With plenty of audience participation and lots of singing and dancing, Bobby learns that the real reason for being thankful lies in his home, where his journey began.

Santa’s Holiday Surprise

Dec. 2 – Dec. 21, 2006

Written and Directed by Paula Jo Peterson

This original Holiday treat will enchant and delight as the children in the audience help Dolly and Santa save Christmas when the elves get stranded in Hawaii on vacation and can’t get back to the North Pole. Bosko the Backyard pup keeps us in stitches as he repeatedly appears in parts of Santa’s prized Red suit. Santa warns him not to take any more things that do not belong to him, and when Bosko appears with yet another part of Santa’s missing Red Suit, Santa has no choice but to keep Bosko off the sleigh this year. Everyone is so sad for Bosko until we discover that Bosko hasn’t been taking these missing things, Bosko has been finding them! Bosko saves the day and helps guide the sleigh for Santa! Santa will sit on his throne for pictures and after spending an hour getting to know Santa during the show, the children are both happy and unafraid to sit upon his knee and tell him their Holiday wishes in exchange for a free candy cane and a picture to save. And it sure beats the long lines at the Mall.

SLEEPING BEAUTY

Jan. 6 – Jan. 27, 2007

Adapted and Directed by Paula Jo Peterson

In this "kid-friendly" version of the classic children’s tale, ten children from the audience are selected to attend the Royal Baby Shower for Princess Daisy and they will give the baby gifts of playfulness, sweetness, curiosity, beauty, love and the gift of fishing! As Daisy grows from a baby, to 6 yrs., to 10yrs., to a beautiful young woman, we get to watch her use these gifts…some to her advantage and some…not so good to her advantage. In fact, she pricks her finger on a sewing machine needle and falls into a deep sleep for 100 years, thanks to Hazel Miss Bad Mood who isn’t a really a witch…she is just a misunderstood woodland fairy who wasn’t invited to the baby shower and got her feelings hurt. All ends well when the child from the audience chosen as the knight-in-shining-armor locks up the dragon and gives the Princess her wakeup kiss. (One of these feats proves much harder to do than the other) Children learn the importance of inviting your neighbors to the party, ESPECIALLY when you aren’t getting along so good, to listen to your parents and never go anywhere by your self, to share what you have with others and that to forgive and forget is the best feeling in the world!

HUMPTY DUMPTY AND THE QUEEN OF HEARTS

Feb.3 – Feb. 24, 2007

Written and Directed by Paula Jo Peterson

Humpty Dumpty the Royal Stuff Finder, who can find anything that is lost, is sent to find the missing crown of the Queen of Hearts. She lost it while snatching all the hearts from her Queendom and stuffing them in her royal treasure box. She is under the misunderstanding that the more love she takes, the more love she will feel. But why is she still so lonely and unhappy? With the help of the children in the audience and the Queen’s loyal royal companion, Tiger Lily, Humpty Dumpty not only finds the missing crown, but teaches the Queen of Hearts that you must give your love away in order to feel the love return to you from those around you. The children each have a felt heart pillow hidden in their laps and when they hear the Queen say the important words, "I Love You," they throw their hearts at her! Great fun and full of life lessons of love, respect and friendship.

OLD MAC DONALD’S FARM

March 3 – March 31, 2007

Adapted by Michele Moad-Hageman and Directed by Paula Jo Peterson

Mrs. Mac Donald just wants a nice cup of coffee in the morning, but she has no milk! Thus begins the wonderful story of a farmer and his wife and how their family grows to include a cow, a horse, a sheep, a rooster, a duck and a cute pink pig. The best part of the story is that some of the children in the audience become the animals in the show! What a thrill for both the children watching and the children participating! This is a musical and the singing and dancing will be great fun for everyone.

CINDERELLA

April 7 – April 28, 2007

Adapted by Michele Moad-Hageman and Directed by Paula Jo Peterson

Living back in the days when people actually did become Kings, Queens and Princesses, Cinderella can only dream of having the same kind of privileged life that her stepsisters enjoy. However, these nasty stepsisters, along with her horrible stepmother, don’t share at all and can be quite mean when they put their minds to it. In this kid-friendly version of the classic fairy tale of good triumphing over evil, Cinderella not only gets her wish to dance at the Royal Ball and she manages to get the Royal Prince along in the bargain! The Fairy God Mother is a hoot and the ugly stepsisters are hilarious in their attempts to ruin poor Cinderella’s happiness. This show is full of life-lessons that can help children see that they are wonderful just the way they are and that things turn out much better for you if you are nice to the people you either live with or will eventually meet on your way through life.

THE THREE BEARS GO TO THE BEACH

May 5 – May 31, 2007 –Written and Directed by Steven Stoli

Papa, Mama, and Baby Bear head for the white sand and sunny shores of Port Aransas in this rousing story of safety at the beach. Papa does his best to show his family how to survive a family outing to sunny Port Aransas…only to find that he often needs the rescuing! There is surfing, fishing, dancing and swimming fun in this cute and cuddly show about the Bear Family’s trip to the beach. Jack Riccardi lends his famous radio voice as the announcer of all the fun festivities that both the bears and the children on the audience take part in. By the end of this exciting show, even the toddlers have learned the basic rules for summer safety at the beach!

Snow WHITE and the Seven Dwarfs

June 9 – June 30, 2007

Adapted and Directed by Paula Jo Peterson

A classic children’s tale about a poor girl’s journey from rags to riches, Snow White takes the audience on a fun and frolicking adventure that includes a handsome Prince, a mean, but misunderstood Stepmother, a Mirror with a big mouth and seven cute dwarfs played by local child actors who are selected from our Kreative Teens and Kreative Kids classes. This annual production encourages the children in the audience to take acting classes to learn how to perform in front of an audience. Who knows? This year’s tiny audience member could be next year’s dwarf with a paycheck! A wonderful opportunity and great fun for the whole family!

THE LITTLE MERMAID

July 7 – August 4, 2007

Adapted and Directed by Paula Jo Peterson

You have seen this crowd-pleasing classic in cartoon fashion, but we have the real thing on our stage! The Little Mermaid sees a handsome Prince drowning in the ocean and she struggles with all her might to rescue him and drag him to the shore! When she does, she sings a beautiful song for him and as he awakens, he thinks he has heard an angel! But, she hurries back into the ocean before he can see her and whom should come around the corner but Violet a local girl who is a little too greedy for her own good. Violet pretends to be the girl who saved the Prince and he is so honored and duty-bound that he feels he has no choice but to ask Violet to be his bride. Will he marry Violet? Will the Little Mermaid stay away from the shore or will she make her presence known? Will she be too late to stop the ill-fated marriage? Singing and dancing abound in this sweet show about honesty and courage that has too much fun stuff in it to not have a happy ending!
