Sandy
Schwartz was born & raised in San Antonio and is damn proud to
be a true Texan. She is one of eleven children, being the second
child and the oldest girl. The family lived in the country, so she
was raised riding horses, raising cattle, & showing sheep at
rodeos and fairs around Texas. She attended grade school,
kindergarten through 8th at St. Cecilia’s Parochial School, and
her high school alma mater was Providence High School, an all girls
school. She earned a scholarship in drama, but after 12 years of
being under the watchful eyes of the nuns, she decided school wasn’t
the path she wanted to follow. She went to work in a bank and a year
later married and had four children, 3 girls & a boy. The kids
are all married and Sandy is quite proud of her 10 (that’s right
folks, count them 10 grandchildren. When her children started
school, she returned to banking at Texas Commerce Bank-San Antonio,
and after 22 years, she ended that career as a Vice President/Branch
Manager.
She devoted a lot of
time to her community. She has been on the Board of Directors of the
Southwest Chapter of the Leukemia Society and an Executive Member of
that Board as well as serving as President. She worked on the
fundraiser, Slightly Off Broadway, for the San Antonio State
School all four years that it was held. It was after performing in
this show in November, 1992 (she played Riff, one of the Jets from
West Side Story) that Steven Stoli "discovered" this warm,
sensitive, loving, caring, giving, gifted, funny, multi-talented
(well, you get the picture) lady. She has been performing with the
Stoli Entertainment Group ever since.
After leaving the
banking business in April 1996, she became a member of the staff
here at the PLAYHOUSE.
During these years,
Sandy has created some of the most incredible and memorable
characters in shows like Everybody Loves Opal, 12 Angry Women,
Social Security, Waiting for MacArthur, Driving
Miss Daisy, Little
Old Ladies in Tennis Shoes, The Odd Couple, Come Blow Your Horn,
Harvey, His Girl Friday,
Lilies of the Field, Whales of August, Girl Talk, Guess Who’s
Coming To Dinner, Silver Wings, Divorce-Southern Style, Little
Ladies on the Lamb, Life with Mother Superior, Grace & Glorie,
On Golden Pond, The
Housekeeper, and many, many others including both of The
Playhouse blockbusters - Seven
Nuns in Las Vegas and Seven Nuns South of the Border.
Sandy has been
honored with GLOBE awards for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy
for her performances in The Curious Savage and in Steel
Magnolias and Best Actress in a Comedy for Those Crazy Old
Ladies in the House on the Corner.
Sandy says that
nothing has been more rewarding, fulfilling or fun than meeting and
getting to know you, our wonderful audiences, these past years and
she appreciates you supporting the work we do & looks forward to
many more years to come.
Sandy thanks all the
actors, directors and techies she’s ever worked with for helping
her to grow & challenge herself. She thanks the staff with all
my heart for all their hard work & dedication. Special thanks
& love to Mr. Stoli and Larry for believing in her and helping
to make her dreams come true.
